Kinja'd!!!

So my hardrive is kind of shitting out. I have the OS backed up on a flash drive and all my BS on an external hardrive. That’s not the issue though.

I don’t have the burner password for my Kinja account memorized/written down. Will this be an issue after I put the new hardrive in? I’m assuming the automatic login is based of IP address, but I have know idea how/where that’s stored (Hardrive/Wireless card/TheInternet idk much about computers) or if there’s a specific file from my hardrive I need to transfer, that has my internet history.

I just wanna stay out of the grays on Jello-picnic and keep my authorship here :(

Also to give you an idea of how computer savy I am. I’m still using windows 8. So talk to me like a 5 year old. An eighties one, because a modern day 5 year old would know more than me.

I was about to ask, since I know this might be a function, but I take it you use Google Chrome and signed in via your email? It should save your burner password.

It would be stored in your browser, most likely. Try logging in on a different browser, see if you’re logged in. If you’re not, I think there are ways to see what passwords are saved in your browser.

Installing a new hard drive will erase all your previous browser history, including logins for websites. Kinja as well as many account based websites won’t use an IP address to track logins. Hence why clearing your search history or cookies will log you out of many websites.

Edit: Reading others comments I forgot that some browsers will actually store password info for you, so try go to your browser settings for that. Usually you have to do this when entering your password for the first time but it may be able to save your logins without doing that.

What web browser are you using?

Kinja'd!!!4

what browser do you use?

if it’s chrome paste this in your search bar: chrome://settings/

scroll down and select ‘advance settings’

find Passwords and Forms

click on “manage passwords”

select the password you want to see, you will need to put your windows credentials in again to see it.

Firefox is similar, go to Options > Security > saved logins

Try Macrium Reflect Free to do a full clone instead, so your new hard drive will work 100% like your old, minus the being dead.

As far as I know for Kinja, you can’t save the cookie. I had to re-enter mine every time.

I tried, but IE isn’t working at all. I’ll try and download Firefox to try it that way.

Is your burner password saved in your browser?

If you buy a new SSD, most ship with hard drive cloning software included. If you go that route, it should be able to clone your drive as-is to a new drive without losing anything. You’ll boot up like nothing ever changed.

If you do not have your burner password saved anywhere, you need to go that route to keep your burner account. Period.

You say you have your OS backed up on a flash drive, what does that mean? The OS is usually too large to back up on a flash drive.

I was the lead tech at a computer repair shop for 5 years, and have worked in IT for 10 years, 8 years professionally.

Do you live in/near NJ?

Well, Jalopnik is labeled as “Never Saved” but it auto logs in whenever I come here and Jalopnik/Kinja/Oppo don’t show up in my google account as a saved password. And googling, I can’t find a way to save passwords to chrome apart from whenever it pops up when you manually log in. :/

Two questions, why are you using a burner account without a written password? And why are you still using windows 8 when 10 was for free, is a lot like 7 (so it will be familiar) and it’s more stable and efficient?

Opposite side of the country. It’s a 64gb flash drive (less than $20 too!). The recovery program that came on the computer used it and said it’s ok

Some one else mentions a free HDD cloning software. I’ll try that because I’ve already bought a new HDD.

I wrote it down and lost it :(

I can’t remember why I didn’t upgrade to windows 10. I remember looking seriously into it, but decided not to. I’ve gotten used to 8 and haven’t had any problems, but I remember there was a negative thing about 10 that I didn’t like :/

What free software? There is software that doesn’t work well with Windows 8 and newer. I just want to be wary because if your current hard drive is failing, you don’t want to make a mistake cloning anything.

Hmm, for me it is saved in the browser under kinja.com, though I’d imagine it could be stored elsewhere depending on where you first logged in.

Macrium Reflect.

It’s not failing seriously. Just noisy and I’ve had one or two corrupt files of things that weren’t serious. I backed it up on an external drive before it started going though, so worst case I loose my burner.

Idk if the external is a clone though. That’s why I did the OS separately on a flash drive. The external drive is a WD passport and I used the software that came with it. I’ll look at it and see if it makes a exact clone or not.

then unfortunately I would say it is not recoverable, there’s a chance that if you are logged into chrome it will remember your key and let you sign in again. The best bet to test this would be to sign into chrome on another machine and test to see if you can get into Kinja.

If not you’re outta luck. The nature of the burner account is it’s meant to be a temporary anonymous account that you cannot recover passwords

lol, I was troubleshooting with a burner account to make sure before I gave advice.

WD Software is iffy. Likely only a document backup and not the full OS.

Macrium should be okay. I’m used to using software from Paragon. Just from work basically. I need to get the latest version eventually.

did you scan it for bad sectors?

I would scan and repair bad sectors before cloning a failing drive.

Personally, I would start over fresh with a ssd hd drive. It’s only a burner account.

Thanks! I saved a copy of my Temp files to the external drive. I’m still gonna do the Macrium copy and try that first after I put in the new hard drive.

Good idea I’ll do that.

I already have the new HDD, and had everything backed up to an external drive before it started to go.

So far I’ve saved the OS to a flashdrive through the computer’s recovery program. I also saved a copy of the TEMP folder to the external drive, although I don’t have much faith in copying and pasting the TEMP folder onto the new drive.

I’ll do the HDD scan and see what happens.

Do you have an adapter or enclosure to put the new drive in for cloning?

Is your burner password saved in the browser?

1) I was gonna use the old adapter/enclosure or is that a bad idea?

2) Kind of. Chrome auto logs in, but when I went to manage passwords in Chrome Jalopnik showed up as unsaved. Apparently the only time you can save a password is chrome is when it asks you too after manually logging on. Something I never did except when I made the burner. So I guess no really.

Tomorrow I’ll get another flash drive or CD to copy the disk image onto. Overall I’m good to go, I’m just trying to save the burner if I can. Not really a big deal, especially since it only took a week or two to get authorship here. Jalopnik will be a pain in the butt if this doesn’t work, but whatever :)

Give it a shot. As long as your original drive doesn’t get borked in the process, you should be okay. Just do a Disk Copy from your current to the new, and it should do the rest of it by itself. If it offers to do a Sector By Sector, I would suggest not using it. If it gives you the option to remove free space between partitions, that is okay. Most importantly, if it will automatically resize your partitions for the new drive, that’s what you want to do. Let it take it’s time, and when it’s done, swap the new drives and you should be back in business no problem.

Thanks again!
